What is DBT?
What is Dialectical behavioral therapy or DBT?
This type of therapy that is helpful for several things like emotional dysregulation, or certain diagnoses such as borderline personality disorder. It is a mesh between a class the client takes and individual therapy they receive. In this class that is like group therapy but not in the traditional sense, the client learns a skill (how to effectively communicate for example).
In conjunction with the class the client will see an individual therapist. The client will have an evaluation card that they bring with them to show what skills they learned and used in the prior week. DBT is all about learning skills, implementing them, and having someone hold you accountable. In many cases a client will go through a DBT class twice because there is a lot to learn.
The client can get a lot out of the process. DBT is about changing your thoughts and behaviors and learning how to do things in a new way, while managing your emotions. It is not just helpful for one diagnosis; it can be helpful for many things.
